Check it out. It’s not breakfast this time.

Instead, I decided to go all out and make a dinner that was totally good wine worthy. It’s amazing how much time you have on your hands when the kids are away for a week.

When we went to Lina’s yesterday, I went a bit wild and bought some nummy deli meats, and cheeses, some basil, gnocci, and a loaf of crusty bread.

Tonight I decided to put some of that wholesome goodness to good use. I got out the last of the Smirnoff and made a vodka tomato cream sauce for the gnocci. And, then I sliced some chicken breasts and stuffed them with Brie and pesto (thanks Miss M for that great idea) and baked them until the pancetta that I wrapped them in was all crisp and the cheese was soft and bubbly. A few steamed broccoli tossed in some butter and truffle salt and a light green salad completed the meal.

I tell you, it was so good, I had to have TG remind me to take a picture before I ate it all.

And, now, I need to go knit a bit and do some serious digesting. Luckily, TG is taking care of the dishes tonight.

I wrote a few weeks back about Sunday brunches being something important and special, here at chezDarts and this morning was no exception. The kids asked for French Toast, which in my opinion is generally a nasty business.

I don’t really have much of a sweet tooth. And, your traditional egg coated and syrup smothered bread lumps don’t do much for me. So, I decided to take a traditional french toast recipe and give it a bit of a twist.

Turns out, a little bit of work and a lot of fresh ingredients really go a long way to making a french toast that is tasty and rich (without being overly sweet) and these bread lumps were a hit with the kids, as well as the grown-ups.

I started with eggs and milk, but then I added real vanilla, some honey, a little salt, and, a little something extra – orange zest.

Then, just to top it off, because syrup is not my thing, I added a scoop of berry compote and some ricotta cheese mixed with honey and more orange zest.

Awesome.

Next weekend? Maybe some crepes. Maybe.

Tonight I celebrate New Year’s with a glass of wine in my hand and a heaviness in my heart. I really enjoyed 2009 and am honestly sad to see it go. This year was full of love, life, good friends, family, and yarn. Lots of yarn.

And knitting. In 2009, I knit…

A Smattering of Socks

A Sweater or Two…

A Couple of Clapotis

and a Sock Monkey

Whew.

I wonder what next year will bring?

Happy New Year everyone! See you on the flip side!

I haven’t had the posting Mojo lately. I think I have been spending too much time on Ravelry.

I did cast on for a pair of socks though. These are being knit out of that new fangled merino/cashmere/nylon blend that all the kids are raving about these days.

You can’t tell that these are Sunshine from the new Cookie A. book, but soon enough, it will become easier to recognize.

I know that we had agreed, as per the vote, that I would knit these out of the Alchemy sock that you all helped to choose. But, really, I tried and just couldn’t get gauge. The yarn was too fine. So, here we are with the Squoosh.

And, I am all but finished the Shroomin’ Sweater.

Although you can’t tell from this pic, I only have the sleeves to do and this is one finished sweater. Winter, I am ready!

Obsessive

Last night, my husband told me I am obsessed. With yarn.

To which, I of course told him; I am so not.

I mean, when you look at this definition, it doesn’t sound so nice, right?

ob·ses·sion

n.

  1. Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety.
  2. A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion.

But, the more I think about it, maybe I am. And, maybe that is not such a bad thing.

A few years ago, before I started knitting, I was a stressed out, tightly wound trouble maker. I wasn’t so happy and I wasn’t so nice.

Then I found knitting and it was like a whole, other world opened up for me. I made new friends, we had our own special language, and we even went on knitting related field trips together.

Knitting makes me happy, calm, and easier to be around.

So, I think then, that this definition makes more sense for me. And, I can live with this obsession.

ob⋅ses⋅sion

–noun

1. the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.
2. the idea, image, desire, feeling, etc., itself.
3. the state of being obsessed.
4. the act of obsessing.

Oh, and as an added bonus, I make pretty things.  So, tell me; what has your obsession done for you?

I have overextended myself a little lately and consequently, I have been forced to rush a little to meet some deadlines.

We spent the weekend landscaping. It was some tough, let me tell you!

Hard Work!

Hard Work!

Another project taking up a lot of my time is the Cookie A. KAL project #2.

For some reason, I decided to knit a pattern this month that requires a little more concentration than is usually allotted during the tv hours in our house. Of course, with small children, all knitting related activities need to be jammed into those fleeting moments between the time that the kids go to bed and the time that I go to bed. And, this is prime time for both tv watching and snuggling with TG.

So, not a ton of progress is being made on these Marlene‘s, but they sure are pretty.

We need to be finished in six days!

We need to be finished in six days!

This is the first time I have broken into the Sundara stash and I must say, I love how it is working up. The subtle shading and firm twist really makes the twisted ribbing pop!

Of course, things would go a lot faster if I stopped sneaking away from the knitting to buy some new yarn. But how could I resist this?

Ick…

Monkey appears to like my favorite silk scarf almost as much as I do. However, she found a new, and strangely icky way in which to love it.

Oooooh, Pretty

Anyone know how to get boogers out of a silk scarf?

Right now in my house, a weird thing is happening.

TG and Bunny are kickin’ it old school and enjoying a bit of gaming action, Sega style. Seriously! Bunny has been begging TG all week to pull out his old Sega gaming system and get it hooked up.

See, this past weekend, she found some old game cartridges and wanted to see what they were for. So, right now, they are playing Sonic the Hedgehog and are busily collecting coins. Yay for holding onto old crap stuff.

And, since the last sweater worked out so well, I went ahead and cast on for another one. This one is knit with chunky yarn on tree trunks super huge needles and should be done in no time.

I won’t tell you what the yarn is in case it makes you horribly biased against the sweater. So, a sneak peak is all I am giving at this point. Rest assured, all will be revealed in good time.

Sneaky Looky

And, the scarf of obligation is nearing completion. See how pretty?

Bringing in the New One

So, I took a little trip back down memory lane in my last post. I realized that while I knit a very large amount of socks, I was lacking in the more intricate types of projects that challenge and allow a knitter to grow.

As I looked a bit deeper at the completed projects over the last year, I became a bit disappointed and wished that I had taken more time to create bigger and more intricate projects. Where was my Henley Pullover? My Venezia Sweater? My intricate lace projects? Self designed sweaters and other items were sadly non-existant.

However, once I finished the post, I went back upstairs to the main living area of the house. My two children were there. My husband was there. All were smiling. Monkey wanted me to snuggle and Bunny wanted me to play some Wii with her. I was instantly busy and happy.

Then it hit me. The reason that I have no large and intricate projects is that I am enmeshed right now in creating a larger and more intricate project than any one sweater or lace stole. I am creating a family. Cheezy, but true.

So, this year, my focus will be to work those things that inspire me. To create garments that make me and those around me happy. Small children are only small once. Lucky me to be able to share this time of their lives.

So, to that end, I have narrowed my Ravelry queue down to a few items that I believe are achievable in those stolen moments that one gets while raising small children. However, there will be no hard and fast rules about the projects that I will make this year. 2009 will be what it will be. Happy New Year all.
