Potential

I am currently in the process of trying to pare down my WIP’s.

See, every so often, something comes over me and I realize that my start-itis has gotten way out of hand and I have so many projects on the needles that I can’t keep them all straight.

So, I start working on the projects already on the needles and resolutely commit to not casting on for something new….

… until I start looking at the yarn…

And then new things jump onto the needles and work their way, eventually to finished objects.

As a matter of fact, Rhinebeck provided me with some opportunity for new projects:

Oh, and since Knittinggrammy tagged me with a 6 things meme, I wanted to let her know I hadn’t forgotten. I just need a little more time to think of 6 things about me. In the meantime, here is the original 6 things meme I did a while back.

So, I have put myself and my yarn on a diet. I have wanted to lose the last 20 lbs of baby weight that I put on with my first babe over 5 years ago.
The plan is that for every 5lbs of weight that I lose, I will reward myself with $100.00 worth of yarn. Seems fair right? Let’s hope that it works out to be a win/win situation.
The only thing that doesn’t count are yarn clubs. Because, well, those never count…. everyone knows that.

Wow, so I really screwed the pooch messed up and forgot to take any pictures of Rhinebeck. I have pictures of New York, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and even Woodstock, but no pictures, what so ever of Rhinebeck. I think at that point, I was just plain delirious and perhaps a little high on wool fumes and sheep poop.

I suppose you will have to visit AuntyTink, or SpinKnit’sblog to see some pics of Rhinebeck itself.

What I can show you, however, are pictures of some FO’s that I managed to eject from my needles while I was there.

Bunny, On Voting.

Tonight, I took Bunny with me to the polling station so I could a) vote and b) take her through the democratic process.

When we went to the polling station, which coincidentally, was her school. She first gave me crap for parking in the teacher’s parking lot. Apparently, even though it was 7:20 PM and we were voting made no difference. So, lest her attention be diverted from the democratic process, I moved the damn car.

Then, I explained what we were there to do. She didn’t really get it, until I explained that this was a federal election and that this person would basically be in charge of the whole country for the next few years, at least. The conversation went a little something like this:

Me: Do you understand what I am doing here?
Her: No. What?
Me: Voting for who I think should be the next person who is in charge of our country (remember, she is 6)
Her: Randy Jackson?
Me: No.
Then we got into the actual pooling booth and she argued with me (loudly) about who I should vote for, based solely on the party name. As we were leaving, she again asked me what was so important about voting. And, I again explained that we were choosing the person who would be responsible for making laws and running Canada for the next while.

She thought a bit about this, then replied, “that’s mean” and the subject was closed.

I am getting close to being finished a number of projects; the simple Malabrigo 2×2 rib scarf, my Olive Branch Yoga hoodie, and now, the Go With the Flow socks that I started at the beginning of September.

Of course, this leaves me with the ultimate knitters dilemma; what to knit on the way to Rhinebeck?

Luckily, I have lots of options. Simple socks and other accessories really are the way to go when you are touring New York city with 7 of your closest friends.

So, with that in mind, I will be taking my copy of 25 Favorite Socks to Knit from Interweave and a few different yarn options. I need to make a decision soon as there are only 4 more sleeps left! What do you think?

Connections

I found a new blog today.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t add many new blogs to my blog reader very often. I very jealously guard my blog roll and since I have precious little time to myself these days, the adding of a new blog must be carefully thought out.

Ok, now is the time to call me weird. Go ahead, leave it in the comments, you know you want to.

All kidding aside though, I look at the blogs that I do read as enriching my life somehow. For example, I get my daily laugh from The Yarn Harlot, good advice from WendyKnits, and parenting camaraderie from the BlueBlog. I also get caught up on what all my good friends are doing here, here, here, and here.

So, when I saw this blog in a link back to mine, I knew I had to check it out. I knew that I would enjoy this blog within the first few scans of the page, however, like a good friend, it will take time to work my way through the older posts, get to know the writer, and form a connection.

I see blog reading as a friendship that grows over time.

Sometimes this hasn’t happened and I have had to remove the blog from my blog roll because the content simply didn’t hold my interest.

Somehow, I don’t think that will happen this time.

Look what jumped onto my needles. Now that the Malabrigo Mitts are done, I decided that I needed a matching scarf to keep me warm (and stylish) this winter.

Malabrigo Scarf

Malabrigo Scarf

Truth be told, this scarf, although simple, has been a serious pain in my butt.

I actually cast on for it 4 times, using different needle sizes.

First, I tried a US 8, but that gave me a very dense, stiff, fabric. Not good for a scarf.

Then, I tried a US 9. Same problem. Then, a US 10, but the pooling was horrendous. I had a white strip up the center of the scarf. It looked awful.

Then, to combat the pooling, I went to a US 11, but the needle size was too big and the stitches were very uneven. Finally, I went back down to the US 10.5 and voila! Perfect!

p.s. Ms. Bananie, I lied. There are only 9 more sleeps until Rhinebeck!

The Malabrigo mittens are finished. They took about 3 days and are the perfect blend of style and function.

Malabrigo Mitts Front

Malabrigo Mitts Front

Pattern: Jack-in-the-Box Mitts by Robin Melanson from Knitting New Mittens and Gloves
Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted in Alpine Pearl (these took just under one skein)
Needles: US size 6 for the cuff and size 7 for the rest of the mitten
Mods: I choose not to do the fiddly cabled rib cuff and instead did a plain 3×1 rib cuff. I also knit one plain round before starting to decrease at the top of the mitt

I had been thinking for days that I should order some more Alpine Pearl for a matching scarf and possibly a toque. But, when I went into Make One Yarns the other day, they had just received an order of Malabrigo and one of the colors that came in was the Alpine Pearl. So, I snatched up a few more skeins.

Oh, did I mention, only 11 more sleeps until Rhinebeck?
